The Play

A Musical Revue that looked at 100 years of Musical Theatre, from the unforgettable melodies of Jerome Kern to late twentieth century works such as the music of Sondheim and Lloyd-Webber. The piece challenged students in techniques of musical performance, dance and story-telling as the vibrant and highly-anecdotal development of the musical unfolded. Classic musicals represented and dissected by “Showtime” included “Gypsy”, “ Oklahoma ”, “West Side Story”, “Anything Goes” and “Kiss Me Kate”. Also particular focus was given to some of the works of Stephen Sondheim – from “Company” to “Sweeney Todd”.

Course Notes

“Showtime” became the first piece that West Glamorgan Youth Theatre toured abroad in over 15 years, visiting Roskilde in Denmark in August 2003 (the company also toured “Equus”). It was also a first return to Margam Orangery in many years, building on the success of the company at Margam Castle the previous summer with “Electra”.
