The Play
Prospero, cast adrift by his usurping brother Antonio, has landed on an island with only his daughter Miranda, a beast Caliban, and the spirit Ariel for company. By use of his magic art, he raises a storm to shipwreck his enemies and exact his revenge. These enemies are separated on the island. Several stories now intertwine. The plot of Sebastian to usurp Alonso as King. The Drunken Butler and jester Trinculo plot to kill Prospero, encouraged by the beast Caliban. Miranda meets the king's son Ferdinand and they fall in love. Prospero watches and controls all these characters, before finally forgiving his enemies, releasing Ariel and fore-going his powers.
